Face Down in Detention

Here is my newest image to my portfolio, after working on it for a month with now about 7 months experience in 3ds Max.
This image takes place in a classroom, on another Planet, with the Metal-Like species of a creature
serving after school detention. Planet This planet is a planet where the species are
Metal-type creatures, Plastic rusts and metal does not, and every once of
a while a deadly gas comes through the floors killing all near. The Creature
is sad about having to serve after school detention it and is slouched down onto the desk.
He does not yet noticed the deadly gas. These metal creatures can also not feel any pain, so they
are less careful about injuries.

In this image I really learned a lot about general as well as character modeling. After spending
only 30 minutes setting up the scene with floor and tables, I spend two weeks trying to model the chairs
the result was very unsatisfactory the chair looking stiff and distorted. So I just gave up on it and
started to model the alien creature, I box modeled him, with general techniques. I then added abuse to
his arm socket and the area around it. Also rigged him and posed him. This only took a couple of days.
Then I was recommended plane modeling the chair, and it worked out beautifully to perfectly fit my reference
The crazy things is I modeled it in 20 minutes!. The lighting was farely quick as well just mr Area
Omni's, the books were plane modeled, pencils were extruded N-Gons, mini-skateboard was box modeled, binder
was box modeled, and the plant was made in Vue, with the vase being a lathe. The spikes on the creature
are cones modeled with parametric deformers. I also spent probably a total of a week at different times doing the materials and mapping.
The compositing was semi-complex, well at least for me,

I painted the deadly gas in Photoshop, by erasing the image with a splatter brush with a bitmap under
(a technique learned from 3D World). The depth of field was a z-depth pass, and an ambient occlusion pass
was also used. I color corrected it so it didn't look as computer generated, and fixed up some other things. I also touched up the Ambient
Occlusion in a few spots.

To sum it up I learned the basics of rigging and character modeling, learned more about modeling, also
learned the basics of UVW unwrapping. Also learned some techniques to painting textures in Photoshop, and improved my skills with modeling,
materials, rendering, lighting, and compositing even more.

This scene might appear very alien to many viewers, as this is a personal work (as all mine is) I
do it for my pleasure.

I did want more details in the scene, but ended up not adding more, which is one thing I wish I had done.

In my next piece I plan to do more work on character modeling, it will probably be done in a little longer since school is starting .

Thank you for reading, and please leave a comment telling me what you think. It is so sad that soon the alien will perish in deadly gases :(.

Beyond the Curtain

Well, my fourth project in 3ds Max. This image is named Beyond the Curtain. This image takes place in a small, non-professional looking auditorium, with so-so cheap seats, with vinyl cushion. I learned a great deal during this project about 3ds Max.Learned a lot about rendering, lighting, modeling, and materials, and learned many things about mental ray. This image was rendered in 3ds Max Design 2009, even though the project was mostly made in Max 9. Used Final Gather with 300 FG points, 1.0 density, and 45 IO no. of FG points. Also used Global Illumination, with 1000 samples 10,000 per light, and a 200 radius. Rendered a Z-depth pass and ambient occlusion, and made a composite in Photoshop CS3 Extended. Logarithmic exposure control used, and mental ray was my render engine of choice (obviously, hence the final gather and global illumination.) Rendering time was a whopping 11 hours long rendered from 12:00 a.m to like 11:00 P.M. the next day. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy.

The Wishing Well

My third image been using Max for about 4 months now, worked on it in May, but didn't work on it that much, been really busy lately. It is called the wishing well. It is a pretty simple image, the scene as about 200,000 polys. Fountain from a lathe, grass done with hair and fur, and such. In this scene I learned a lot about the Hair and Fur modifier, and the controls of it. Also a lot about the Arch and Design mental ray materials, and MR Daylight System.
I know there are improvements that can be made, but I want to move on.

My Material Creations

These materials were just created, even though they are at the back of the portfolio, (I put them there because they aren't really a project, just a display of materials). I created them for the site mrmaterials.com, they are a new site that allows users to upload and download mental ray materials, it is a great site. The models are courtesy of Jeff Patton.

Here is a semi-complex water material, made for surfaces, looks a little electrifying here, but is excellent in scenes, download it at mrmaterials.com.

This one here is a photo-realistic gold material

An Alien Material created for my upcoming project

While searching for a good dirt material I created this material

A semi-frosted glass material ideal for cups

A Satin material, made to look as real as possible, the red is a little dark in this image, a really great material.

Here is one I just came across while creating a tile material, it is a wet tile texture.

A plastic, a little bit worn out, dirty and a little dented but still some gloss still remains

A Piano Finish material
